It was seventh grade when I won the coveted $100 prize for a science project I did on biofeedback, testing the effects that seconds of imagery could have on a person’s mood. More excited about my newfound riches than for my own results, I never suspected that tri fold board would have anything to do with what I do now.
My pull to do art was amplified by a love of interior and retail space design. I like unexpected textures, mingling opposites and bold elements, in a way that creates ultimately peaceful surroundings. It’s a mirror of my own character. Socially and environmentally, I have an activist’s heart. In art, I am a peacemaker.
Most of my ideas are born between midnight and nine, when the distractions are sleeping and the subconscious takes over. The calm environment in which these concepts arise has a lot to do with the minimalist nature of my work. I welcome their unexpected arrival, which may be why I prefer working with materials I can’t completely control, such as rust and patina textures achieved through chemical reaction, or letting natural wood grain determine the direction of a piece. Science and nature are both geniuses and I like to give them their space.
